Disability Awareness Training
The First Responder Disability Awareness Training is an eight-hour course designed to help first responders recognize and respond to emergencies involving individuals with an array of mental and physical disabilities. First Responders that would benefit from this training include Police Officers and Supervisors, Investigators, Firefighters, EMS Personnel, Public Safety Officers, Emergency Management personnel, Fire Marshals, 911 Operators and Dispatchers, Security Officers, Code Enforcement Officers, and others that interact with the public on a daily basis.
This specialized training consists of awareness of various diagnoses, including autism spectrum disorders, tourette syndrome, epilepsy and seizures, Alzheimer's and dementia, ADHD, visual and hearing impairment, and traumatic brain injury, as well as intellectual and physical disabilities. Responders are taught to define the various terminology used to describe disabilities and be aware of local, state, and federal laws pertaining to those with disabilities, including the American's with Disabilities Act.
This training will help first responders improve the ability and increase the opportunity for successful outcomes and better management of situations involving members of the community who have special needs due to a disability by enhancing their interaction skills to overcome communications barriers and build trust.
