OSHA Hazard Comunication Standard - 29 CFR 1910.1200
The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) requires employers to provide training and information to employees about hazardous chemicals in the workplace. The HCS includes the following requirements:
TrainingEmployers must provide training to employees when they are initially assigned and whenever new hazards are introduced. Employees must be retrained whenever new hazardous chemicals are introduced.
Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)Chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers must provide SDSs for each hazardous chemical. SDSs communicate information about the chemical's properties, risks, handling and storage practices, and protective measures.
Chemical labelingContainers of hazardous chemicals must be properly labeled.
Written programEmployers must develop and maintain a written hazard communication program.
Five key elementsEmployers must follow five key elements to ensure a safe working environment: hazard identification, labeling, safety data sheets, employee training, and program implementation.
